Our Church and History

Founded in 1887, the First Congregational Church of Western Springs is a vibrant and thriving congregation, welcoming all people as children of God.  Our members come from many traditions which allows us to learn from one another and grow in our own Christian faith in an atmosphere of love and respect.  Our Church seeks to be a faithful people, to introduce our children to a loving Jesus, and to live out our faith in Christian mission and service.   

We are an Open and Affirming (ONA) congregation and welcome people of all sexual orientations, gender identities, and gender expressions to join with us in our worship, mission and service.  

Our growing congregation is comprised of approximately 1,250 members and 415 pledging households.  Our two-building campus in historical “Old Town” Western Springs includes an inspirational sanctuary and an education building, which houses the First Congo Preschool, staff offices, and rooms used for classes, meetings, fellowship and community activities.

Role and Responsibilities 

The main role of the Facility Manager is to manage all aspects of our two major buildings, an historic church building and school/activity building, as well as the building grounds. This position is responsible for facility operations, regular maintenance, and keeping our facilities clean and in good repair. 

This person will manage all aspects of the facilities and grounds operation, maintenance, repair, and housekeeping, including the supervision of one full-time custodian, management of maintenance contracts, event set-up and take-down, programmed door and camera security, life safety systems/components, and capital projects.  The Facility Manager reports directly to the Director of Operations, but functions as part of a diverse, dedicated staff and works collaboratively with both the Properties Committee and Green Team.  

The ideal candidate will possess a sensitivity to the unique aspects of working within the context of a faith-based organization, with the goal of maintaining an environment that supports the ethics, culture and mission of the congregation and staff. 

Responsibilities include coordination of all regulatory inspections with the local and state authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), including boiler, elevator, and building inspections and regular fire drills. 

The Facility Manager works with the Properties Committee to develop and manage the Properties budget. He/she manages the purchase and inventory of parts, supplies, and equipment for the successful maintenance and repair of the grounds and facilities in a safe, cost-effective manner.  

Qualifications and Education Requirements 

High School Diploma required. College degree or relevant building trade experience preferred. 

Five years or more of Facility Management or Construction Project Management experience in a diverse work environment. 

Driver License?  Yes. 

The candidate must consent to a background check, and the successful candidate must participate in “Safe Church” training designed to protect children and vulnerable adults on our campus.  

Preferred Skills 

Building trade experience; working knowledge of HVAC, Fire Protection, Electrical, Plumbing,  Security Systems, and Carpentry. 

Ability to read blueprints and understand systems drawings. 

Strong problem solving and building systems  troubleshooting skills. 

Experience and working knowledge of NFPA, OSHA, energy management strategies and green initiatives. 

Negotiation skills necessary to manage cost-effective maintenance agreements and vendor contracts. 

Results oriented self-starter with strong time management skills. Capable of working both independently and as part of a team. 

Ability to keep accurate records. 

Minimum computer skills include familiarization with Microsoft Office suite of products, especially Excel and Word. 

Physical requirements – Able to lift up to 40 lbs. and safely use step and extension ladders. 

Strong organizational and planning skills. Will be responsible for planning (or assisting the Properties Committee in planning) maintenance and construction projects in the most cost and time efficient manner to minimize disruptions to the church’s activities. 

Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with staff, lay leaders, church members, visitors, local first responder units, civic officials (including permitting office and utility managers), vendors/contractors, and neighboring property owners. 

Demonstrated focus on quality and safety. 

Specific Responsibilities: 

1. Buildings and Grounds Maintenance:  

  • Overseeing all aspects of building maintenance, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing and HVAC systems. 
  • Coordinating and managing repairs and preventative maintenance schedules. 
  • Ensuring the cleanliness and upkeep of the facility’s interior and exterior spaces, including the sanctuary, preschool, meeting rooms, offices, restrooms and other spaces. 
  • Managing landscaping, snow removal, and other groundskeeping tasks. 

2. Safety and Compliance:  

  • Overseeing waste and recycling services for the facility 
  • Ensuring the facility meets all safety regulations and building codes. Develop/implement action plans to address any safety concerns. 
  • Participate in periodic updates to and implement emergency preparedness plans. 
  • Conducting regular safety inspections and audits. 
  • Managing security systems and procedures. 

3. Budget and Finance:  

  • Assisting Properties Committee in developing and managing the facility’s budget. 
  • Controlling costs related to maintenance, repairs, and utilities. 
  • Managing contracts with vendors and suppliers. 
  • Seeking opportunities to optimize resource allocation and reduce costs. 

4. Vendor and Contract Management: 

  • Managing contracts with vendors for services like landscaping, security, and waste disposal.  
  • Overseeing the work of contractors and ensuring quality standards are met.  
  • Evaluating proposals from potential vendors.  

5. Space Management:  

  • Coordinating office moves and renovations. 
  • Managing furniture and building-related equipment inventories. 

6. Other Responsibilities:  

  • Communicating with Church staff, Properties Committee, and tenants regarding facility-related matters. 
  • Acting as the primary contact for facility-related emergencies and urgent issues as they arise and responding appropriately based on the seriousness of the issue 
  • Supervising, coordinating workloads and prioritizing tasks for facility staff. 
  • Implementing sustainable practices and promoting environmental responsibility. 

7. Work Schedule  40 Hours/week preferred but open to part time for the right candidate. Work on alternate  Sunday mornings is required, with comp time off during the preceding or following week.   

8. Compensation and Benefits 

  • Compensation will be commensurate with experience and expertise, as well as the expected number of hours worked per week.  
  • The Facility Manager will receive paid time off according to the Church’s Time-Off Policy, including vacation, holidays, and leaves of absence for certain personal or family matters.   
  • Medical, dental, life, retirement and disability benefits are available through The United Church of Christ Pension Board at the employee’s expense.
