Not Our Problem: An Afghan Refugee’s story
Join us in Plymouth Hall to hear Abdulhaq, an Afghan refugee and former translator for the U.S. military, share his powerful story of service, perseverance, and hope.
Abdulhaq served as a Mission Essential Personnel (MEP), translating for a U.S. Marine platoon during the war in Afghanistan. Despite promises made to Afghan allies who assisted American forces, he was initially denied entry to the United States. What followed was a harrowing journey marked by violence, uncertainty, hunger, and the high costs demanded by smugglers as he sought safety and refuge. Eventually, he made his way to Germany while awaiting a resolution to his immigration status.
Throughout this ordeal, Marine veteran Spencer Sullivan, whose platoon Abdulhaq had supported, tirelessly advocated on his behalf. Thanks to years of persistence and advocacy, Abdulhaq was finally able to resettle in the United States in December 2025 after receiving Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) status.
Come hear firsthand about his experiences during the war, his long journey to freedom, and the challenges still faced by many Afghan allies awaiting resettlement. Rich Van Hees, from RefugeeOne, will also give a brief update on refugee resettlement.
