First Congregational Church of Western Springs is hiring a Communications Manager. This part-time hourly position requires 20-25 hours a week during the program year and approximately 15 hours per week during the summer. Other than the weekly staff meetings, flexibility in establishing work schedule will be afforded to the Communications Manager. The primary responsibility of this position is to cultivate consistent, clear, and creative communications (print and digital) that embody and promote the vision, mission, and values of the church. The primary responsibility of this position is to cultivate consistent, clear and creative communications that embody and promote the vision, mission and values of First Congregational Church of Western Springs. This person is to keep abreast of goings-on in the church and help communicate/promote church events/programs/services to the congregation and greater community, when appropriate. Specifically, this position will envision, create and implement an ongoing and evolving comprehensive communications strategy and plan. Various forms of communication will be employed to inform members/community of church activity, including but not limited to:
Written collateral materials, such as a monthly newsletter, fliers, posters, press releases, direct mail postcards, and brochures
Social Media (Facebook and Instagram)
Website enhancements to existing site and work with staff and Technology Committee on discovery, design, development and implementation of proposed new website
Regular targeted and mass emails such as the monthly newsletter, weekly email update, church fellowship and group email updates
Written correspondence from the senior and associate ministers
Texting (explore/implement for various staff/groups)
Develop targeted content event and group content updates for Realm
Work with staff, lay leaders and/or Communications Liaisons to help identify communication goals and target audience, and determine best method of communicating information in a clear and inspiring way.
Gather/write articles, layout and produce monthly newsletter, including folding, copying, uploading to website and sending out e-version in the weekly email update.
Continually update and expand electronic and social media content. Consider ways to improve our website and help implement appropriate enhancements, possibly working with the guidance of the Technology Committee.
Help design/layout/print Lenten Devotional and set up template for daily emails in Constant Contact
Collaborate with group and committee Communications Liaisonsand members to ensure event information and/or updates are communicated in congregation-wide communications
Help design/layout/print Advent-related direct mailings
Organize and maintain library of all First Congo, as well as Mission & Outreach partner logos, fliers, print and digital imagery, and print/digital communications collateral
Work with local print and online media (WS Journal, Patch, Tower Topics, and The Doings) sharing event information for media placement
Assist as needed in writing/proofing/sending out target emails.
Collaborate with technology service vendors to ensure website maintenance is up-to-date and site security is preserved
Help promote programs and projects such as Celebration Sunday; committee projects such as Stewardship; Advent services and programs , labyrinth walks, Lenten services, programs, and devotionals; rummage sale, and annual meetin
Work with Senior Minister, Stewardship Committee, Business Manager and Office Administrator in developing/implementing annual stewardship campaign. (Enhance online giving opportunities.)
Design/produce/coordinate mailing of three-four direct mail postcards (to WS residents)
Develop slide presentations as needed.
Photograph (or line up photographer for) various church events and organize and maintain digital photos appropriately on shared Z drive.
Help produce year-end highlight video for annual meeting in late January (select song, photos, etc.) and other videos as needed.
Review layout and content of Sunday bulletin as needed
Attend weekly staff meetings (currently Tuesdays at 11:45am-1:00pm) and quarterly extended planning meetings.
Keep current of the latest trends, methods, and materials as related to church marketing, etc.
Collaborate with Director of Children’s Ministry to develop and distribute monthly email
Other duties and activities as required
An affirmation of the ethos and theology of the United Church of Christ tradition as it is embodied at First Congregational Church of Christ and the ability to brand/communicate that ethos.
A commitment to the Christian faith and a calling to help others grow in their faith through church involvement.
Bachelor’s degree and communications (written, web, graphic design) experience required.
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Pages, Powerpoint/Pages, SoundCloud, WordPress (including ability to work with HTML code). Experience with iMovie, Excel, Constant Contact, ACS, and/or A/V equipment a plus.
Strong oral and written communication skills, with both an ability to see the big picture as well as a sharp eye to detail.
Experience with social media platforms
Ability to multitask and meet deadlines
Creative thinker, self-motivated
Ability to work independently and as an effective team member.
The Communications Manager is hired by the Executive Committee of First Congregational Church and will participate in annual review conversations with that committee. The Associate Minister for Faith Formationwill provide direct oversight and guidance to the Communications Manager.
